  9.  AB    OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the HIV risk transmission through sexual contact
  10.        among heterosexual women, married or not. METHOD: Retrospective study
  11.        with 11 women infected through sexual contact who have been followed for
  12.        treatment at the AIDS Reference and Training Center Sao Paulo-Brazil.
  13.        Non-structured interviews were done to define the whole situation
  14.        envolving the infection. RESULTS: Most of the women were married or had
  15.        a steady companion (10) at the moment of the HIV test. They did not have
  16.        any other sexual contact out of their relationship. 9 of them were
  17.        infected apparently by their husbands or companions, and just 3 knew
  18.        about the risk of their partners. 7 of them were completely unaware of
  19.        the risk habits of their husbands. None of them had the habit of using
  20.        condoms in their sexual contact. CONCLUSION: A high level of unawareness
  21.        by women, of the risk habits of their partners was found. This lack of
  22.        awareness comes from the social submission of women in third world
  23.        countries. This fact can be important to explain the increase of sexual
  24.        transmission among women in Sao Paulo State. HIV prevention policy which
  25.        includes the discussion about private life between couples is necessary.
